Why Latin American Studies at UVic?

Latin America is a major player in the world economy with a dynamic history, culture and political life. The Latin American Studies Program offers students intercultural competency skills through a broad interdisciplinary understanding of this important geo-cultural and political area as well as knowledge of Spanish.

Study abroad

There is no better way to learn about a culture than through immersion. Latin American Studies students are encouraged to spend a term earning UVic course credit while studying in Cuenca, Ecuador through the Department of Hispanic & Italian Studies. Check out the many other great field schools in Latin America offered by departments in the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Social Sciences.

UVic also has partnership agreements that make it easy for you to do a semester abroad at a University in Latin America. Currently, UVic has partnerships with universities in Brazil and Chile.
