Hispanic Studies students with Prof. Stewart

At UVic, you will develop and use your Spanish inside and outside the classroom by actively engaging wih your instructors, classmates, community and our study abroad programs.

Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world, and the third most widely spoken foreign language in Canada. There are many reasons to study Spanish, which is the official language of 20 countries:

  • Immersion in the cultures and arts of Latin America and Spain.
  • A great career move: useful in education, translation services, international business, government, non-profit organizations and volunteer projects that deal with Latin America and Spain.
  • The ability to communicate in their own language with members of the large Hispanic communities in Canada and the United States. Both Canada and Mexico are members of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
  • Gateway to a rich and exciting literature: read the works of Cervantes, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Federico García Lorca, Pablo Neruda, Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel García Márquez in their original version.
  • A great asset when travelling abroad and engaging people.
