Indigenous learning

Staff, faculty, and the HSD family of students—on campus or online—respectfully acknowledge the traditional territory and land of the Coast Salish people on whose traditional lands our university resides..

Acknowledgement and welcome

We have worked and partnered with various Indigenous communities on Vancouver Island and are grateful to the Coast Salish, Kwakwaka'wakw and Nuu’chah’nulth people who are such generous hosts and stewards of this traditional island territory.

We offer support to Indigenous students throughout their university experience, from their first contact with UVic through graduation and beyond.

"The social work program at UVic is so enlightened. Obviously a lot of hard work has gone on at UVic regarding Indigenous issues. They had the foresight to see the need to have this social work program, unique to Western Canada. They have instructors from all over the country, including other programs that influence social work. There’s a recognition of the value of Indigenous cultures being so varied and unique and diversified, a richness of the program." — Delland (Del) Majore, MSW, Métis
