Energy Holiday Closure 2024

The University of Victoria is once again planning for a sustainable holiday season break and we are asking for your assistance in helping to reduce our carbon impact. As part of our goal to make UVic a leader in sustainability, we have planned several operations to save energy and conserve our resources during the closure, starting on the afternoon of Tuesday December 24th 2024 and ending on the evening of Wednesday January 1st 2025.
- Temperature: All major buildings will be lowered to 17⁰C. Exceptions will be managed as shown in table below, such as buildings in student residences and animal care facilities.
- Ventilation: All major buildings will have ventilation fans turned off or setback. Exceptions will be managed as shown in table below, such as buildings that operate fume hood systems.
To help save energy use, please turn off electronics if permitted by your Systems representative. Staff are requested to leave their desktop computers in “sleep” mode for this period. Laptops and other mobile devices can be locked up in cabinets or desk drawers. Printers and other equipment should be turned off.
If you work in a space with window blinds, please close the blinds. This helps to reduce bird strikes and reduces heat loss through the windows.
If you are working over the holiday closure, please wear warm clothing rather than plugging in a portable heater, which can be a fire hazard and impact electric circuit capacity.
We appreciate the efforts of the campus community. These simple strategies will reduce UVic energy and greenhouse gas emissions significantly over this time period.
