Rugby national champs

On March 24—exactly three weeks after claiming their second-straight Canada West banner—the University of Victoria Vikes women's rugby 7s team captured the 2019 National University 7s championship title in Kingston, Ontario. The Vikes went undefeated in the tournament, reaffirming their place as one of the premiere women's rugby schools in Canada.

ELC and education department in Mexico

Cultural exchange is a core component of the program at UVic’s English Language Centre. A simple request for "something more"—suggested by the Department of Education in the state of Veracruz, Mexico—created what has become an invaluable opportunity for Indigenous-international collaboration and dynamic learning at UVic.

Federal funds for Indigenous law centre

The construction of a national centre for Indigenous law and reconciliation at the University of Victoria received major funding support today with the federal government's announcement of $9.1 million for the transformative project. The centre of excellence for the study and understanding of Indigenous laws will house the world's first joint degree in Indigenous legal orders and Canadian common law (JD/JID), launched at UVic last September.

Canada's federal, provincial and territorial governments could be doing a much better job at implementing policies that reduce alcohol-related harms, according to new reports from the UVic's Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (CISUR).

The Fine Arts Building is now home to a pair of large Indigenous art works, including the 1996 Untitled (Hok-Hok Kwagiulth Cannibal Bird Mask) by John Livingston and Calvin Hunt and the large 1986 Untitled (Kwagiulth Split Killer Whale Mask) by Tony Hunt Sr.

Heavy snow, not light work

February's heavy snowfall was exceptional in more ways than one on campus. Even while most people enjoyed a “snow day” when the campus was closed late afternoon Monday, Feb. 11 and the following day, there were those who walked, carefully drove or carpooled to work so that residence students got fed, roads were plowed, pathways were cleared and payroll got processed.

Patrick Lane: Rest in Poetry

Award-winning poet and novelist Patrick Lane passed away on March 7 at age 79, the result of a heart attack. His publisher, McClelland & Stewart, made the announcement, calling Lane “one of Canada's most renowned writers” —a claim few would refute. His passing made headlines in media outlets nationwide.

Romeo Dallaire honoured with new award

Retired lieutenant-general, former Canadian senator and best-selling author Roméo Dallaire will receive the first-ever Public Humanist award this month from the University of Victoria’s Faculty of Humanities for his tireless efforts to change the world for the better.
