State of mindfulness

For three years, Faculty of Humanities Dean Chris Goto-Jones has been teaching a free, online course through Leiden University called Demystifying Mindfulness. More than 112,000 people have so far enrolled in the massive open online course (MOOC). Tom Gleeson is lead author of a Nature Correspondence article published this week that says we are not doing enough to protect and manage global groundwater resources from contamination, salinization, depletion and neglect.

Conservation field school in Tanzania

Last August, as the sun set on the Serengeti National Park, 19 UVic geography students and their instructors arrived in Tanzania to begin a month-long field school on conservation management. Despite the hardships of water rationing and extreme heat, it was a trip of a lifetime for the students, who immersed themselves in the customs and culture of Tanzania while learning about local forest management and ecological conservation practices.

Cross-linking technology tightly binds

UVic professor of organic chemistry Jeremy Wulff’s research team led the design of the new class of cross-linking materials in research that appears in the journal Science. Together, UVic and UBC Okanagan researchers discovered a broadly applicable method of bonding plastics and synthetic fibres at the molecular level.

Victoria Hand Project extends reach

A UVic initiative that provides 3D-printed prosthetic hands to amputees in developing countries, will now extend its reach to help people in underserved and remote communities in Canada and the US. This initiative led by Nick Dechev, professor of mechanical engineering and ED of the Victoria Hand Project, received a $1-million award by the 2019 TD Ready Challenge, announced Dec. 3. Funding will also initiate UVic research trials on 3D-printed spinal braces to treat scoliosis in children.
