Dion Manastyrski studied biology at UVic, where he honed research skills, and he has years of experience in photography and publishing. He drew on these talents to create Prairie Sunset: A Story of Change, a hefty art book with pages of photos and first-person narratives telling the story of European settlement in the area.

Kelsey Ramsden is the author of Success Hangover: Ignite your next act. Screw your status quo. Feel alive again, released by Lioncrest Publishing last fall. It was written for people who accomplish their long-term goal—such as earning a degree or promotion—yet feel unsatisfied.

Patrick Lane: Rest in Poetry

Award-winning poet and novelist Patrick Lane passed away on March 7 at age 79, the result of a heart attack. His publisher, McClelland & Stewart, made the announcement, calling Lane “one of Canada's most renowned writers” —a claim few would refute. His passing made headlines in media outlets nationwide.

Edith Iglauer: a woman of words

The archives of Edith Iglauer—acclaimed journalist, author and activist—are now available at UVic Libraries for learning and research. Recipient of a UVic honorary degree in 2006 for her role as a trailblazer, Iglauer had a love of the written word and an instinctive grasp of the significance of extraordinary events.

Edith Iglauer achieved an extraordinary writing career covering topics spanning the Second World War to a modern-day fishing village. Her personal and literary archives, including original notes from her New Yorker articles, have been donated to UVic Libraries for scholarly research.

A second Giller Prize for Esi Edugyan

Internationally acclaimed UVic writing alumna Esi Edugyan has won the 2018 Scotiabank Giller Prize for her latest novel, Washington Black. Edugyan wins $100,000 on this, the 25th anniversary of Canada’s richest literary award—and also earns the distinction of being one of only three authors to twice win the Giller Prize, alongside M.G. Vassanji and Alice Munro.

Bill Gaston (writing) has won the 2018 City of Victoria Butler Book Prize. Separately, Brad Buckham (engineering) and David Nelles (School of Earth and Ocean Sciences) were honoured with a Teaching Award of Excellence by Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia at their annual conference last month.

This four-letter word has a bad reputation among language purists, but new research from linguist Alex D’Arcy proves “like” is one of the English language’s most versatile words, with its use stretching back to Old English. Much of her work focuses on two controversial and misunderstood functions of “like."

50 years of literary excellence

UVic is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its revered literary journal, The Malahat Review, including with a limited-edition monograph by UVic Libraries to be launched Jan. 25 and a new exhibition opening the same day. Outgoing editor John Barton says being published in The Malahat "is a rite of passage for many writers."
