2018 Co-op Students of the Year

The Ring

From supporting Syrian refugees’ arrival to Victoria, to curating interactive exhibits and identifying opportunities in the labour market, this year’s UVic Co-op Students of the Year are positive change makers. Each student was recognized by their co-operative education programs for their meaningful and outstanding contribution to multiple areas of their life including class, the workplace and the greater community.

UVic launches Indigenous law degree

The historic launch today of the world's first law degree to combine the study of Indigenous and non-Indigenous law welcomed the first cohort of 26 students from across Canada and acknowledged the efforts to establish the far-reaching response to Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

2018 Vanier scholars

Three UVic researchers have received 2018 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships—one of the federal government’s most prestigious scholarships for doctorial students and post-doctoral researchers. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of students’ extraordinary combination of academic excellence, research potential and leadership.

BC scholarships for study abroad

The Irving K. Barber BC Scholarship Society delivers a series of scholarship and award programs that support BC students throughout the province and outside the country. In 2018, 10 UVic students were awarded 33 per cent of the Premier’s awards, more than any other BC institution this year.

The Ring

The Department of Art History and Visual Studies is broadening its first-year opportunities with both a new classroom and a new class concept. AHVS 101—a seminar focusing on art, images and experience—launched last month and anchored in the department’s new art collections classroom.

Attracting international students

UVic, Camosun College, Royal Roads University and the three Greater Victoria school districts have joined forces to promote Victoria as an education destination for international students. Education Victoria involves recruitment activities and promotes academic cooperation and student pathways.

This fall, UVic students are making noise again at the Royal British Columbia Museum. Thirty-nine students in Alexandrine Boudreault-Fournier's third-year anthropology course are working with museum learning program developers to create soundscapes that will bring sonic life to many objects on exhibit.

Donation provides bursaries for Indigenous students

A $500,000 donation from The Joyce Family Foundation will establish new bursaries at UVic to help Indigenous students with financial need achieve their academic goals.
