Looking to create a personal website? A blog to discuss your latest research? Maybe you want a place to show off photos of your cat? Thanks to the Online Academic Community (OAC), current University of Victoria employees and students can now create their own websites and blogs—all you need is a NetLink ID. With more than 100 themes and plugins available, UVic faculty, staff and students can create, customize and manage their own sites—professional or personal—through a university-supported WordPress platform.

Arctic Inspiration award for FOXY

Makenzie Zouboules, third-year UVic honours political science and writing co-op student, is something of a celebrity in her hometown of Yellowknife, NWT. Last month, along with FOXY co-founders Candice Lys and Nancy MacNeill, Zouboules accepted a $1-million Arctic Inspiration Prize for their work with northern youth. Originally part of Lys’ PhD dissertation on public health promotion, FOXY (Fostering Open eXpression among Youth) is a participatory research project aimed at talking with young people about sexual health, sexuality and relationships across the three northern Canadian territories.

Degree based on learning and action

The Ring

For Kathryn Juricic, a social sciences graduate, getting outside and seeing impacts of local work makes her passionate to continue this after her studies at UVic. Juricic began at UVic with the intention of moving on after her first year; however, after taking some environmental studies courses she didn’t want to leave. “I felt I wouldn’t receive the same calibre of learning and atmosphere anywhere else. I was surrounded by inspirational people who were bound together through learning and action,” explains Juricic.

BC contract for humanities grad

For recent grad Darcie Scollard (English), the co-operative education program has made her future a lot less daunting—and helped her pocket a contract with the provincial government to carry her into post-grad life. “As a humanities student, I was particularly worried about life after university,” Scollard says. “Since I became a co-op student, a lot of stress around finding a job after graduation has been lifted off my shoulders.”

2014: Welcoming our largest class

The Ring

September brought the largest incoming student class to date at UVic, with 21,255 students enrolled—up 2.4 per cent from last year. Most of the growth is among undergraduates, with notable increases in engineering and business programs. International enrolment also continues to rise. An official count will be conducted in November, along with full-time equivalent (FTE) numbers. Statistically, the year stands poised to record solid, sustainable growth for our campus community.

Campus construction update

As the semester opens, a wide range of construction activities dot the campus, but four major projects stand out. Though temporary fences and construction work can be a minor inconvenience, these projects are also part of how the university is delivering on the promise of a better learning environment.

UVic in the summer

“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy.” That old song comes naturally to mind while strolling UVic’s walkways, enjoying the sunshine and slower pace of summer on campus. No visible throngs of students rushing to the next class, shorter lineups at the sandwich bar, no circling the parking lots hoping for a spot to open up. Just a relaxed, laid-back time to regroup, catch up and chill out. Or not.

Life lessons in perseverance

UVic law student Ben McConnell will be graduating with a JD (Juris Doctor) degree in June. And like many of his fellow classmates, McConnell worked hard to get to where he is today. The satisfaction of convocation day—the sense of achievement in the face of challenging coursework, long reading lists and intensive research that a law degree demands—is awesome for anyone. McConnell’s path, and his commitment to education, have been distinct and remarkable. In addition to having to contend with the everyday realities of being a law student, McConnell is totally blind—a result of early-onset glaucoma and another serious eye disease that afflicted him during childhood.

Small-scale planning, big payoff

The Ring

Many people associate municipal planning with large urbanized communities. For geography and environmental studies grad Richard T. Buchan, however, some of Vancouver Island’s smaller communities offered much larger opportunities. Living, studying and completing co-op work terms in Port Hardy, Campbell River, and North Cowichan gave Buchan great opportunities for hands-on learning in community planning. “I think every student should take the co-op option and apply for work in small towns,” says Buchan, “you gain work experience and often have more responsibilities in a smaller community.”

Q&A: 2014 3M National Student Fellow

The Ring

Tye Landels (English) is one of 10 undergraduate students across Canada receiving a 3M National Student Fellowship this year. On June 18, the third-year UVic honours student will journey to Kingston, ON to receive the prestigious award -- modelled after the long-standing 3M National Teaching Fellowships for university professors -- at an official ceremony at Queen's University as part of an annual national teaching-and-learning conference.
