Chasing the nearly impossible neutrino

Jordan Myslik can trace his interest in physics back to grade three, when he became enamoured with the idea of UFOs. Myslik receives his doctorate this month, and recently started work as a postdoctoral fellow in neutrino physics at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. "But my fixation on UFOs led me to an interest in astronomy, which in turn compelled me to learn more about physics."

ARIEL expansion to produce rare isotopes

The UVic-led Advanced Rare Isotope Laboratory (ARIEL) at TRIUMF, Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, received $8.7 million from the BC Knowledge Development Fund in October. ARIEL expansion will lead to advances in medical imaging for diseases such as cancer, new technologies and materials for industry, and fresh insights into the fundamental nature of matter.

BC funding unlocks national initiative

The BC government has invested $8.7 million in a UVic-led, national initiative to bolster Canada’s world-class rare isotope capabilities. Physicists share Breakthrough Prize

A team of UVic researchers shared in one of the world’s most lucrative science awards this November. The $3 million 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics was awarded to five international experiments, including more than 1,300 individual scientists, “for the fundamental discovery of neutrino oscillations, revealing a new frontier beyond, and possibly far beyond, the standard model of particle physics.” Eight current and former Victoria Subatomic Physics and Accelerator Research Centre (VISPA) members are among the laureates.

CERN Director General Dr. Rolf Heuer to give inaugural Alan Astbury Public Lecture on April 27. The world’s most powerful particle accelerator came back online this month after a two-year hiatus. Already credited with the discovery of the Higgs boson (or “God particle”), the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the CERN facility at Geneva, Switzerland, holds the key to discovering the origin of mass, the nature of dark matter, and much more. As excitement is re-ignited about the LHC, UVic welcomes Dr. Rolf Heuer, Director General of CERN, to the campus for a public talk on the collider’s potential.
