2014 Trudeau Scholar

UVic Law student Aaron Mills’ doctoral work, which explores conflicting legal orders and the workings of contemporary colonialism, has earned him substantial praise and cemented his position as a leading scholar on Canadian constitutionalism and Indigenous law. Mills is a Vanier scholar and a former Ivy League Fulbright scholar. This week, he was handed yet another honour when he was named a Trudeau scholar—one of only 14 given out this year.

EcoCar 2 heads to final competition

UVic’s EcoCAR 2 team of engineering students aren’t just getting hands-on experience while they study—they’re getting their hands dirty. Since April 2011, close to 60 students in mechanical, electrical, computer and software engineering, and business have been hard at work—using multi-million dollar dSPACE, Siemens and MathWorks modelling and testing tools, and a mechanic’s full suite of wrenches and ratchets—re-designing and retrofitting a GM-donated 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco into a next generation plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.

Startup Canada BC awards - 2014

UVic and the Gustavson School of Business were big winners at the recent BC regional Startup Canada awards. UVic was given the award as the Most Entrepreneurial Post-Secondary Institution of the Year. This prize is “Awarded to the college or university that demonstrates the largest commitment and impact in advancing entrepreneurship.”

She’s one of 600 aspiring young researchers from almost 80 countries who has been selected to take part in the 2014 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Germany in late June and early July.

Ian MacPherson, Professor Emeritus

Historian of the university and Honorary Degree Recipient The university lost one of its shining lights in November with the passing of historian Dr. Ian MacPherson. In addition to his scholarly contributions—which were exemplary—MacPherson was a leading administrator and great friend to the university who had recently authored a book-length history of UVic. Moreover, MacPherson stood out as a champion in his field, becoming avant le lettre the type of figure who we now recognize and praise as a community-engaged academic.

NSERC award for math student

Christopher van Bommel, a master’s student in mathematics and statistics, has won an NSERC 2013 Andr&e#180; Hamer Postgraduate Prize from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). Valued at $10,000 each, the prize is awarded to five of the most outstanding candidates in NSERC’s master’s and doctoral scholarship competitions.

Used texts fund food bank

This April the UVic Bookstore donated $3,000 to the University of Victoria Student Society Food Bank, with funds generated by donated student textbooks. The bookstore’s year-round textbook donation program provides students an opportunity to give back to fellow classmates. “We’ve accepted more than 1,700 used books this year,” says Katharine Wright, bookstore manager. “All the funds we receive from these books go directly to supporting on-campus student services.” All donated books are shipped to Better World Books, an organization that redistributes used textbooks for sale online, providing a percentage of the sales back to the Bookstore for student programs, such as the food bank.

Masterminds 2014

Retirement has rarely stopped UVic professors from sharing their rich intellectual knowledge and experiences with communities on or off campus. This April, four UVic retirees will offer insight on topics ranging from Islam to the use of math to control infectious diseases as part of the annual Masterminds free public lecture series. Presented by the UVic Retirees Association and the Centre on Aging—with support from the university—the series takes place at 7 p.m. in UVic’s Harry Hickman Building, room 105.

Economic role for universities

Building new programs and expanding capacity in high-demand areas to meet the needs of both students and the new economy is a key role for BC postsecondary institutions, says University of Victoria President Jamie Cassels. Cassels was speaking to an audience of 160 business leaders in Vancouver April 24 during a panel on “Institutions as Economic Enablers” that was part of the “Putting BC To Work” business forum hosted by the Business Council of BC and CKNW AM980.
