UVic launches new Indigenous Plan

This week, UVic launches its Indigenous Plan. The launch is a key event during this year’s Indigenous Week of Welcome. The plan sets out ambitious goals and clear accountability to increase educational opportunities and success for Indigenous students and further develop education, research, outreach and engagement initiatives and programs with an Indigenous focus.

In memoriam: Richard Beard May

The Ring

One of UVic's first faculty members, Richard Beard May, died in Spokane, Washington, in August after a decade-long struggle with brain disease. May was hired by the newly established UVic in 1966 as a faculty member in the Department of Psychology.

UVic launches Indigenous Plan

As a key event during the Indigenous Week of Welcome (Sept. 11–14), UVic is launching its first Indigenous Plan. "The plan places Indigenous students, faculty, staff and their communities at its heart and will guide our work over the coming years," says UVic President Jamie Cassels.

NSERC funding

Cutting-edge research got a big boost Sept. 8 with Federal Science Minister Kirsty Duncan announcing $9.5M in NSERC grants to UVic. The funding announced at UVic and other universities is Canada's single largest investment in fundamental research.

The university is in the early stages of implementing UVic's new sexualized violence policy with creation of a central resource office, hiring of a coordinator of education and response and production of user-friendly materials to support the policy's goals and objectives.

The university's new policy on sexualized violence prevention and response is being implemented through Equity and Human Rights with a central resource office where all members of the university community can seek advice and direct referrals and/or disclose or make a report of a sexualized violence incident. The policy was developed after a year of extensive consultations and research.
