The university flag will be lowered on June 22 in memory of former Chair of the Board of Governors, Dr. Ian Stewart. A Celebration of Life will be held at the University Club on July 31.

A UVic friend and benefactor remembered

Ian Stewart, former chair of the UVic Board of Governors, a close friend, benefactor and a keen supporter of UVic athletics, has died at the age of 84. A well-known and respected leader in the community, Stewart was actively involved in numerous charitable and philanthropic organizations.

Two Canadian provinces now have laws aimed at preventing children and youth from being sent back into the game after a concussion, but not B.C. UVic expert Brian Christie's new research finds that even "heading" a soccer ball produces changes associated with concussion.

The recipients of the university's highest academic honour, the UVic honorary degrees this spring, are: acclaimed nature photographer and UVic alumnus Paul Nicklen; former UVic chancellor Murray Farmer; author Joy Kogawa; Canada-China relations builder Brian Lo; conservation research supporter Christina Munck; and Timothy Vernon, director of Pacific Opera Victoria.

New programmer at Legacy Art Galleries

She's "always been a maker and a writer" — with an eye on art.

Three geographers awarded for teaching and research excellence

The Canadian Association of Geographers announced Phil Dearden, Ian O'Connell and Simon Springer as the recipients of an award honouring research and teaching excellence.

Balloons for coastal mapping

The Ring

Heavy rain did not deter 25 undergraduate geography students from their hands-on learning course on beach dynamics and coastal erosion this February. Using new digital mapping technologies including terrestrial laser scanning (ground based LiDAR), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), kites and balloons, the students captured high-resolution imagery of Cadboro Beach.

Island Health research grants

Improving dementia care, stroke recovery and cancer support services are among the goals of eight newly funded projects involving University of Victoria health researchers. Each of the projects is receiving $15,000 from Island Health through its new Collaborative Research Grant Competition, which aims to strengthen ties between the health agency (formerly known as the Vancouver Island Health Authority, or VIHA) and its academic partners.

And now, thanks to the survival of a 450-year-old woodcut map, Shakespeare’s world can also "open up to us like a Google map,” says Dr. Janelle Jenstad (English), project director of UVic’s constantly evolving Map of Early Modern London (MoEML).

A head start diagnosing concussions

When a young person hits their head on the ice, on the field or at the pool it can cause damage to the brain. However, current assessment techniques make it difficult for medical practitioners to diagnose a concussion because the tools currently in use are subjective and difficult to interpret. Thanks to $750,000 in new funding from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, the BC Knowledge Development Fund and UVic’s Division of Medical Sciences, two of Canada’s top brain injury experts are on the case.

Ross Rich, who graduates this November with a commerce degree from the Gustavson School of Business, has spun himself into his dream job already—as a Marketing Assistant with Columbia Records in New York City. Rich will also maintain the artist-management firm he started in 2013, which includes talented singer Jade Tjorhom (another UVic student) on its artist roster.
