When UVic's new civil engineering program launched in 2013 with a clear focus on sustainability and Indigenous communities, it caught the attention of Kear Porttris. The program's emphasis on making the best use of natural resources and lessening environmental burdens was immediately appealing.

Siyad Jama's journey to a BCom degree at UVic's Gustavson School of Business began when he stepped off the plane in Victoria for the first time in 2011. "I had no idea what to expect," he recalls. "It was all new to me—Canada, Victoria, UVic. I knew it was the warmest place in Canada, but coming from Kenya, even that meant something different."

Ariel Mishkin entered Gustavson five years ago with the conviction that her place was in the international community, despite previously having limited opportunity to travel. Since then, she's worked in Mongolia, Poland and India, studied at Poland's Kozminski University, travelled the Trans-Siberian Railroad, tried her hand at Mongolian throat singing, pursued her love of photography, won five scholarship awards, and kept up an A average while doing it.

Rowan Meredith misses the rain. The Slavic studies major, who graduates from UVic in November with the highest GPA in her faculty, has trudged the empty rail beds of former concentration camps in Central Europe and visited Russia in the throes of Olympic mania—but now she is in Los Angeles for graduate studies and “misses the rain desperately. It never ever rains here. Having grown up on BC’s west coast, it seems bizarre to me. I’m not dealing well without rain.”

Art Napoleon was already a national figure when his TV show, Moosemeat & Marmalade, premiered on APTN in January 2015. He had performed at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, opened for Buffy Sainte-Marie and been interviewed by veteran correspondent Tom Hawthorn for the Globe and Mail in September 2010 for the release of his album Creeland Covers, sung almost exclusively in Cree.

For Emily Mailes of Melbourne, Australia, deciding what to study was a daunting process. “I was not one of those people who always knew what they wanted to do.” Six years post-high school and having relocated to Victoria, Emily decided to pick a path and move forward with her life. “UVic’s School of Health Information Sciences stood out,” she says. A relative is a grad who now has an interesting and lucrative career. The global opportunities across the tech sector held considerable appeal along with the school’s promise of guaranteed placement upon graduation.

Degree based on learning and action

For Kathryn Juricic, a social sciences graduate, getting outside and seeing impacts of local work makes her passionate to continue this after her studies at UVic. Juricic began at UVic with the intention of moving on after her first year; however, after taking some environmental studies courses she didn’t want to leave. “I felt I wouldn’t receive the same calibre of learning and atmosphere anywhere else. I was surrounded by inspirational people who were bound together through learning and action,” explains Juricic.

Seeing beyond limitations

As an MFA candidate in the Department of Writing, Hannalora Leavitt has spent the past two years fulfilling the same kind of duties and responsibilities as most UVic graduate students: conceiving a thesis, working with a supervisor, giving lectures, teaching classes, marking papers, reading, writing, research. But given her specialty in creative nonfiction, Leavitt is also tasked with interpreting the world as she sees it—no easy job when you’re a blind writer.

New York state of mind

Ross Rich, who graduates this November with a commerce degree from the Gustavson School of Business, has spun himself into his dream job already—as a Marketing Assistant with Columbia Records in New York City. Rich will also maintain the artist-management firm he started in 2013, which includes talented singer Jade Tjorhom (another UVic student) on its artist roster.

WSÁNEĆ law grad

When UVic law graduate student Robert Clifford was called to the bar in the summer of 2012, the celebration at the Victoria Law Courts involved much more than the usual fanfare of family and friends with cameras and congratulatory flowers. A special ceremony with traditional drumming and singing took place to honour Clifford—a member of the Tsawout First Nation—and the first person of the four Saanich (WSÁNEĆ) Tribes to become a lawyer.

How many people can say they’ve rubbed shoulders with 37 Nobel laureates? For Michelle (Tonkin) Parker that amazing experience capped a remarkable academic career at UVic that culminates this month with a PhD in biochemistry.
