Banting fellows shed light on Indigenous language, orca survival

An endangered Indigenous language and an endangered West Coast wildlife icon stand to benefit from the work of two new Banting Postdoctoral Fellows at UVic. Valued at $70,000 per year for two years, the fellowships are intended to groom Canada's next generation of research leaders.

We use gold for jewelry, tooth fillings and Olympic medals—and soon for Zika detection. UVic chemist Alex Brolo is working with the precious metal to provide a faster (and inexpensive) way to diagnose devastating viruses such as Zika and dengue fever. Brolo is developing new ways to use gold nanostructures in medical applications.

Island Health research grants

Improving dementia care, stroke recovery and cancer support services are among the goals of eight newly funded projects involving University of Victoria health researchers. Each of the projects is receiving $15,000 from Island Health through its new Collaborative Research Grant Competition, which aims to strengthen ties between the health agency (formerly known as the Vancouver Island Health Authority, or VIHA) and its academic partners.

2015 Iskowitz Prize to Meigs

Seven months after being named one of eight recipients of the Governor General’s Awards for Visual and Media Arts, Department of Visual Arts professor Sandra Meigs has been announced as the winner of the $50,000 Gershon Iskowitz Prize at the AGO for 2015. In addition to the cash award, the prize comes with a solo exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario and a further $10,000 towards a publication on Meigs’ work.

In memoriam: Brian Hendricks

The Ring

Longtime and much-loved instructor, filmmaker and writer Brian Hendricks passed away on August 11 at the age of 57. An alumnus of UVic’s Creative Writing program (he won the Petch Prize on his 1979 graduation), Brian taught at UVic as a Continuing Sessional from 1992 to 2011 in the Department of Writing and in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies.
