Since 2006, Wednesday evenings in April belong to the Masterminds lecture series. Every year, there's a new roster of entertaining speakers who delve into their personal passions to bring you engaging and visual presentations on an eclectic range of subjects. This year, join Hamar Foster, Alexandra Pohran-Dawkins, Claire Carlin and Trevor Hancock.

2018 Co-op Students of the Year

From supporting Syrian refugees’ arrival to Victoria, to curating interactive exhibits and identifying opportunities in the labour market, this year’s UVic Co-op Students of the Year are positive change makers. Each student was recognized by their co-operative education programs for their meaningful and outstanding contribution to multiple areas of their life including class, the workplace and the greater community.

In an ongoing effort toward reconciliation, Andrea Walsh has been on a decade-long journey to repatriate residential school art work. “The repatriation work began with the Alberni IRS,” says Walsh, “and our collaborative work to build research partnerships has extended across the country to smaller northern institutions in Manitoba and Ontario.”

Premier John Horgan’s sunny announcement that the provincial government will back UVic’s ambitious new $201-million campus housing project—providing an additional 620 beds for students living off campus—met with roaring applause at a news conference Nov. 15.

Indra Heed Hornsby (LLB '97), has been on a clear trajectory to space from the time she was a toddler growing up in Kamloops, BC. After completing an undergraduate degree with a focus on aerospace policy, Hornsby came to UVic's Faculty of Law to develop a skill she could bring to the space sector.

Chantal Adams recalls her first encounter with Sandrina de Finney, an associate professor at UVic's School of Child and Youth Care. Adams was a first-year student when De Finney and a master's student visited one of Adams' classes. They spoke about their work with Indigenous children and families, sang and drummed and discussed the concept of intersectionality.

Singing to fight the stigma of dementia

"Voices in Motion" is an intergenerational community choir for persons with dementia, their family caregivers and high school students. It's also a UVic research study looking into how participation in an intergenerational choir might foster social engagement and caregiver well-being, improve quality of life for persons with dementia, and reduce some of the stigma surrounding memory loss.

This four-letter word has a bad reputation among language purists, but new research from linguist Alex D’Arcy proves “like” is one of the English language’s most versatile words, with its use stretching back to Old English. Much of her work focuses on two controversial and misunderstood functions of “like."
