One of Canada's best known music theorists and an internationally acclaimed expert on constitutional law are the University of Victoria's two newest Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC). Election to the academies of the RSC is Canada's highest academic honour and signals that the scholar, scientist or artist has made remarkable lifelong contributions to their field and to public life.

Boyd named to marijuana task force

This June, UVic Distinguished Professor Dr. Susan Boyd was named to the nine-person federal task force on marijuana legalization and regulation.

An inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women in Canada was announced yesterday, and 3 of the 5 appointed commissioners have close ties to UVic Law.

Sandborn, Pauly, honorary citizens

Victoria city council has selected Environmental Law Centre legal director Calvin Sandborn (law) and Bernie Pauly (nursing, psychology) as two of the city's 14 honourary citizens for 2011. The award was presented on Jan.19 by Mayor Dean Fortin, in recognition of Sandborn's contributions to environmental protection and sustainability education on Vancouver Island and Pauly's community work on social issues, including homelessness.

New research on the future of BC’s most important resource from the POLIS Project on Ecological Governance With the replacement of its over a century-old Water Act with the new Water Sustainability Act in 2014, British Columbia has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to modernize its freshwater legislation and usher in a new era of water stewardship. The Water Sustainability Act has many promising features that can better protect the province’s freshwater resources. Yet full implementation of the new act hinges on passing critical supporting regulations that will provide the necessary details to make the act fully functional.

An international career path in law

Anna Beatch doesn’t like to plan too far ahead, and that feeds her thirst for adventure. She likes a challenge, which is why she chose UVic Law after receiving her undergrad commerce and business law degree from the University of Alberta. “I wanted to challenge myself and push my boundaries,” says Beatch. “I also chose UVic Law because of the co-op program.”

40th anniversary of UVic Law

2015 is a banner year for UVic Law: its 40th anniversary. We often think of UVic Law as a young faculty, but it has now delivered four decades of first-class legal education. On March 6 and 7, the faculty will celebrate this milestone with a series of events for alumni, faculty, students and friends. It is a time to take stock. What kind of law school is UVic? What distinctive contributions has it made to Canadian legal education over the last 40 years? Or, to put the question with a little more edge: Would British Columbia, would Canada, be any different if UVic Law had not been founded?

Celebrating exceptional staff The celebration of this year’s President’s Distinguished Service Award recipients, hosted by President Jamie Cassels, took place Feb. 25 at the University Club. Before the recipients were named, Valerie Kuehne, UVic’s acting vice-president academic and provost, recognized and congratulated all those who had been nominated.

Watershed moments in Indigenous law

The summer of 2014 was a remarkable period in Canadian legal history. Within the span of three weeks, two Supreme Court of Canada judgments involving aboriginal title and treaty rights were brought down. Together, they significantly altered fundamental elements of national governance and current plans for economic development, as well as the legal landscape relating to land and resource entitlements.

WSÁNEĆ law grad

When UVic law graduate student Robert Clifford was called to the bar in the summer of 2012, the celebration at the Victoria Law Courts involved much more than the usual fanfare of family and friends with cameras and congratulatory flowers. A special ceremony with traditional drumming and singing took place to honour Clifford—a member of the Tsawout First Nation—and the first person of the four Saanich (WSÁNEĆ) Tribes to become a lawyer.

New CRC excited about combined degree program in Indigenous and Canadian law UVic Law professor Dr. John Borrows secured one of the most prestigious research professorships in the country when he was officially named Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Law on Thursday, Oct. 16.

2014 Trudeau Scholar

UVic Law student Aaron Mills’ doctoral work, which explores conflicting legal orders and the workings of contemporary colonialism, has earned him substantial praise and cemented his position as a leading scholar on Canadian constitutionalism and Indigenous law. Mills is a Vanier scholar and a former Ivy League Fulbright scholar. This week, he was handed yet another honour when he was named a Trudeau scholar—one of only 14 given out this year.

Inaugural Engaged Scholar Awards

Congratulations to Dr. Bernie Pauly of the School of Nursing and Dr. Val Napoleon of the Faculty of Law, who have been named the inaugural recipients of the Provost’s Engaged Scholarship Award. The newly created awards program is intended to support and enhance UVic’s vision for the integration of outstanding scholarship, inspired teaching and real-life, community engagement. It recognizes tenured members of faculty who have achieved great distinction as community engaged scholars.
