UVic celebrates with Pride
UVic is unveiling a permanent rainbow crosswalk at one of the busiest pedestrian crossings on campus to celebrate Pride Week in Victoria and to affirm its support and commitment to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ*) community.
Located on Ring Road—between the Student Union Building and the Clearihue Building—the crosswalk is painted in the eight colours of the original rainbow flag, the international symbol of LGBTQ* identity and pride. Planning has been underway for several months to have the crosswalk in place in time for Victoria Pride Week (June 27 to July 5).
UVic is committed to equity, diversity and social justice, and to creating a safe, supportive, inclusive and healthy environment that fosters mutual respect for everyone who learns, teaches, works and lives on campus.
President Jamie Cassels, Vice President Academic and Provost Valerie Kuehne and Gillian Cornwall of UVic’s Positive Space Network will officially open the new crosswalk on Thursday, July 2 at noon. Everyone is welcome to join the celebration.
