New online voter guide in time for election

The economy and environment are hot topics for the federal election campaign, but a new voter guide on women's issues prepared by a University of Victoria undergraduate student aims to push other issues to the centre of the spotlight too. Election 2015: Issues that Matter is an online tool designed to help voters engage with their candidates on important topics such as childcare, economic equality and affordable housing for single mothers. Michael McDonald, who graduated in June with a BA in political science, researched and wrote the guide during his final year at UVic to help voters learn more about a variety of issues ahead of the election.

“This guide highlights a variety of very topical issues that, despite their societal importance, are often overlooked in discussions, debates and media coverage surrounding national federal elections,” says McDonald. “The guide briefly reviews party positions and provides voters with a variety of questions to ask of candidates.”

The voter guide was developed for the International Women’s Rights Project with the supervision and support of Dr. Janni Aragon, director of Technology Integrated Learning at UVic and an assistant teaching professor in the political science department.
