Legal expert: National Aboriginal Day June 21

Law

The following University of Victoria faculty member is available in advance of National Aboriginal Day:

Dr. Val Napoleon (Faculty of Law) has extensive expertise in Indigenous law, Indigenous legal theory, Indigenous feminism, citizenship and governance. She is the academic lead for the faculty’s Indigenous Law Research Unit (ILRU), which partners with communities to investigate questions pertaining to Indigenous law. In 2012, the ILRU collaborated with the Indigenous Bar Association and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada to launch the Accessing Justice and Reconciliation Project. The project aims to better recognize how Indigenous societies use their own legal traditions to deal with conflicts and identify legal principles that communities can access and apply today in order to build healthy and strong futures. Napoleon is available during regular office hours (Office: 250-721-8172 or napoleon@uvic.ca).
