Experts on Pride Weeks 2014

Toronto hosted WorldPride for the first time in North America this year. This week is Victoria Pride Week 2014. The following University of Victoria faculty members are available for comment:

Aaron H. Devor (Sociology/Transgender Archives) is an expert in the development of the North American social movement for transgender support and acceptance. Dr. Devor is the founder and academic director of UVic’s Transgender Archives—the largest in the world—and an elected member of the elite International Academy of Sex Research, an elected Fellow of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality and a national award-winning teacher. He is also a professor in UVic’s Department of Sociology and the former dean of UVic’s Faculty of Graduate Studies (from 2002 to 2012). Rachel Hope Cleves (History) is the author of Charity and Sylvia: A Same-Sex Marriage in Early America (Oxford University Press, 2014), which recounts the history of two Vermont women who lived together in a same-sex marriage from 1807 to 1851. Dr. Cleves is an expert on the history of sexuality in North America, most especially LGBT history and the history of same-sex marriage from the colonial era to the present. She can discuss LGBT history and is available to media from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
