2013/14 Schulich Scholarships
It is already one month into the new fall term at the University of Victoria, but two undergraduate students have already had a chance to enjoy a transition from high school to university without significant budgetary concerns—thanks to the largest undergraduate scholarship program in the nation.
The Schulich Leader Scholarships—each worth $60,000—support academic excellence for undergraduate studies in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) areas of study. The program is powered by the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, which operates nation-wide in both Canada and Israel.
Forty students were selected in Canada from 1,000 participating schools.
Junhyuck (Paul) Kim, Faculty of Science
Wellington Secondary School, Nanaimo
While maintaining a near flawless academic record of 98 per cent in high school, Junhychk (Paul) Kim found time in his busy schedule to demonstrate compassion for others. His volunteer efforts included sending $20,000 in used books to Zimbabwe and basic necessities to Nicaragua and Mexico, as well as raising more than 5,000 non-perishable food items for the homeless. He also founded a new school organization called Youth in Philanthropy. Kim is a young man who demonstrates initiative, dedication, generosity of spirit and selflessness, and among his many achievements, is also a two-time provincial gold medalist and Third Degree black belt in the Korean martial art Taekwondo.
Sarah Khan, Faculty of Science
Mount Elizabeth Secondary School, Kitimat
An accomplished musician, dancer and athlete, Sarah Khan has not only consistently achieved a stellar high-school academic record of 97.25 per cent but is also an energetic, committed and sincere student who quietly leads by example—not only on the volleyball court or in the dance studio, but throughout her community. She has been involved in the student council and the Rotary Youth Leadership group, and also played a crucial role in the establishment of Kitimat’s very first community garden.
