Expert On War Of 1812
A recent Ipsos Reid poll, conducted for the Historica Dominion Institute, shows that both Americans and Canadians think they won the War of 1812.
The following University of Victoria faculty member is available to comment today and leading up to the bicentennial celebrations later this year.
Rachel Hope Cleves (Dept. of History) is an expert on the War of 1812. She has written about it in her 2009 book The Reign of Terror in America: Visions of Violence from Anti-Jacobinism to Antislavery (Cambridge University Press), and has spoken on the topic at international academic conferences. She is a scholar of early American history, who focuses on the history of violence and the history of sexuality and gender, and her current research is about two women who lived in a same-sex marriage in Vermont from 1807 to 1851.
