UVic Students Compete for Chance to Represent BC at G8/G20 Summit
Two University of Victoria political science graduate students will represent BC at the National Youth Ambassador Caucus in Ottawa which starts tomorrow and runs until May 19. During the caucus, 26 out of the 100 delegates will be chosen from each province to attend the G8 and G20 summit this summer. Danielle Grenier and Julia Bareman will put their negotiation and leadership skills to the test, and if chosen will join a delegation that will accompany government representatives to the G8/G20 meetings in June.
The two women initially attended a provincial caucus in Vancouver where their performances won them delegate positions at the National Caucus. The caucus is being hosted in conjunction with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the various Federal Economic Development Agencies. At the caucus, Grenier and Bareman will meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, as well as other government, business, and community leaders.
The students’ role at the National Youth Ambassador Caucus will be to represent their region, while addressing Summit issues such as maternal health, food security, and nuclear proliferation.
The caucus is administered by the national non-profit organization Global Vision. For more information on Global Vision and its programs, you can visit their website at www.globalvision.ca.
