What They Don't Want You To Read

Displays in University of Victoria libraries February 22 to 28 will mark the 25th anniversary of Freedom to Read Week in Canada, an event that encourages Canadians to celebrate and consider their right to intellectual freedom, guaranteed under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Throughout history efforts have been made to suppress or ban books that include The Diviners by Margaret Laurence, the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling, Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter and Origin of Species by Charles Darwin.
        Members of the public are invited to learn more about Freedom to Read Week and see examples of banned or challenged books in displays at the McPherson Library in the William C. Mearns Centre for Learning and in the Curriculum Library in the MacLaurin Building.
