When The Weather Outside Is Frightful
Needing to get to work and can’t decide whether to drive or take the bus? Wondering what the weather conditions are downtown or at the mall? To find out what’s happening right now in a specific area of town, check out the University of Victoria School-Based Weather Network at www.victoriaweather.ca. The network is made up of 125 weather stations mounted on schools in and around Victoria, Lake Cowichan, Duncan, Nanaimo, Qualicum, Parksville, Sooke, Port Renfrew, Lasqueti Island and all of the southern Gulf Islands.
A partnership with several school districts, the network collects real-time weather information and integrates it into the school curriculum. It’s also a valuable community resource, especially during unusual weather events such as this cold spell. Since Sunday, Dec. 14, a record-breaking 55,000 visitors have consulted the website for weather updates.
“One of the peculiarities of Victoria weather is that it can vary greatly in different parts of the city,” says UVic climatologist Dr. Andrew Weaver, co-creator of the network. “So, if you’re going for a walk or driving to work and you want to know what to expect along the way, go to www.victoriaweather.ca and you’ll know for sure.”
