Series to Discuss Carbon Tax, Green Collar Jobs

The Green Shift is gone and BC is moving ahead with its climate change plan. As provincial voters prepare to go to the polls again to select new municipal councils, Common Energy is presenting a discussion at the University of Victoria on the future of the carbon tax. The series “Controversial, Convenient, Consensus? A Dialogue for Creating a Climate Neutral World” starts on Oct. 30 with a discussion about the carbon tax. A follow-up presentation, “Convenient: The Green Collar Solution to Climate Change,” follows on Nov. 6, focusing on exploring the potential for action on climate change to create tomorrow’s green industry and green jobs.
Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, and is limited. The lectures are free and open to the public. Participants will have opportunities to discuss the issues and observe how opinions change over the course of the presentations. Speakers for this event include Guy Dauncey, president of the BC Sustainable Energy Association, and videos of leading US experts, including environmental advocate Van Jones, will also be shown.
“We want there to be many ways for the audience to participate. Our goal is to facilitate a conversation about climate change strategies that will be useful for the audience,” says Naomi Smedbol of Common Energy, a network of students, staff, faculty and regional partners at UVic working to create local solutions to the problems of climate change.
