Murray Farmer Nominated For University Chancellor
The University of Victoria Alumni Association has formally nominated Victoria community leader Murray Farmer to be the next chancellor of UVic.
Currently, Farmer serves as the chair of UVic’s board of governors and has long been a dedicated supporter of the university. He graduated from UVic in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and he received the UVic Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2007.
The volunteer-led UVic Alumni Association has traditionally nominated candidates for chancellor who demonstrate exemplary service to the community and to the university.
Farmer is president of Farmer Industries Group, a family partnership established more than 50 years ago with interests in the construction, development and hospitality sectors. He is also a co-owner of Westside Equestrian Centre in Central Saanich.
Beginning his career with Farmer Construction, he worked in construction management before branching out into the crane rental business. A recognized leader in the construction industry, Farmer served as chair of the Canadian Construction Association in 2005-06.
Known for his community involvement, Farmer has held numerous leadership roles with the Victoria Foundation, the BC Government House Foundation, the United Way of Greater Victoria, the Sidney Marine Discovery Centre Campaign, the Royal BC Museum, and the Royal Jubilee Hospital Foundation. In 2003 he was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for community service.
Under the University Act of BC, groups of seven alumni may nominate candidates for chancellor or senate for three-year terms starting Jan. 1, 2009. Nominations close on March 20 at 4:30 p.m. (PDST). The election will be conducted by the Office of the University Secretary from noon (PDST) May 20 to 4:30 p.m. (PDST), June 20. Voting will take place via webvote and mail-in balloting.
The election is open to all alumni of the University of Victoria as well as past and present members of senate and the board of governors, regular and retired faculty members, regular staff members holding a university degree who have been employed for at least 12 months, and those who completed one full year at Victoria College.
