Backgrounder: UVic Researchers Help Revitalize Port Alberni

The following University of Victoria researchers will be participating in the forum.

Dr. Budd Hall is the director of UVic’s Office of Community-Based Research. A former education dean, Hall is a community adult education specialist with a long experience in community-based research. He has worked in community-based adult learning in Ontario, Africa, Latin America, Europe and Asia.

Dr. Anne Marshall is a professor at UVic’s Department of Educational Psychology and Leadership Studies. She is also a participant in the massive multinational study “Coasts Under Stress” which compares communities suffering economic and social dislocation on the coasts of Vancouver Island, Newfoundland and Ireland. Her research focus is counselling for life-career development and working with youth, adults and families in at-risk coastal communities.

Dr. Rosemary Ommer is the acting director of UVic’s Institute for Coastal and Ocean Research.. She is a geographer and economist, specializing in primary resource industries, policy, ethics and decision making. Ommer is also the facilitator of the “Coasts Under Stress” study, http://communications.uvic.ca/edge/coasts-stress.html.

Dave O’Neil is the director of the Population Statistics Section of BC Stats—the central statistics organization for the provincial government—and a UVic alumnus. His department produces the reference population estimates for municipalities and all other provincial administrative boundaries, as well as detailed population projections for all of the major provincial government administrative regions.

Havind Sehmi is the co-acting president of UVic’s technology transfer office. The Innovation and Development Corporation facilitates the transfer of UVic research to the private sector. It also serves other Vancouver Island post-secondary institutions. This partnership provides researchers, students, and entrepreneurs with access to technology transfer services specific to each institution in accordance with their unique institutional mandates. IDC assists to commercialize innovations, creating local jobs and opportunities for partnerships, and sparking regional economic development.

Dr. Brock Smith is a UVic business professor who teaches marketing and entrepreneurship. His areas of expertise include marketing strategy, marketing research, tourism and entrepreneurship. Smith’s particular interests are in the development of entrepreneurial expertise and the hospitality industry.
