UVic Sports Hall of Fame to Induct New Members At Legacy Awards
A former Vikes rugby MVP, a runner who became synonymous with the spirit of the Victoria Commonwealth Games, and an Olympic field hockey goalie will be inducted into the UVic Sports Hall of Fame when the University of Victoria presents the annual Legacy Awards dinner on Nov. 20 at the Victoria Conference Centre.
Gary Dukelow, Robyn Meagher (pronounced “mar”) and Deb Whitten will join 23 former athletes, teams, coaches and builders who have been named to the hall of fame since 2002 for their career achievements.
“Our Sports Hall of Fame has a key role in preserving the history of athletic excellence at the University of Victoria,” says UVic President David Turpin. “Each of this year’s inductees helped to build this tradition. They exemplify the spirit and ideals of sport in their careers and community lives.”
Dukelow, MPA ’93, was a two-time Vikes rugby MVP (in 1978 and 1980), joining the team on tours of Europe and New Zealand. A member of the Canadian team that earned a quarter-final berth in the 1991 World Cup (Canada’s best finish at the tournament), Dukelow earned 14 caps (for representing Canada in international play) and later served as general manager of the national team. He teaches economics and coaches Grade 8 rugby at Shawnigan Lake School, where he also coordinates the school’s external relations program.
Meagher, MEd ’06, a member of the Vikes cross country/track team from 1985-90, earned silver medals in the 3,000 metres at the 1994 IAAF World Cup and the 1994 Victoria Commonwealth Games. The photo of her one-two finish with teammate Angela Chalmers became an endearing image of the Victoria games. Meagher also competed in the Barcelona and Atlanta Olympics and, during her Vikes career, earned two Canadian university championships. Meagher lives in Victoria and works as a registered clinical counsellor.
Whitten, MEd ’02, played goal for the Vikes women’s field hockey squad from 1985-91 when the team captured two national championships and four Canada West gold medals. In international competition, she was captain of the national team from 1993-95, helped Canada to a silver medal at the 1991 Pan-Am Games, and was a member of the 1992 Canadian Olympic team. She is a vice-principal at Claremont Secondary School, where she also coaches girls’ field hockey.
The Department of Athletics and Recreation established the UVic Sports Hall of Fame to honour a tradition of excellence that includes 62 national championships.
The Nov. 20 Legacy Awards dinner and awards presentations, before more than 500 guests, will also see the UVic Alumni Association present the 2007 Distinguished Alumni Awards and the Alumni Awards for Excellence in Teaching.
