Founder of UVic Spinoff Company Takes First Prize

University of Victoria graduate Leah Tremain has won the first annual BC Chamber of Commerce Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for her creative ingenuity in forming her company, Tremain Media Inc. The company develops educational media for schools, universities, libraries, companies and non-profit groups. Its most recent video, “I Love When You Read,” offers enticing tips and practical reasons for parents and caregivers to read to their children. Being a mom herself, Tremain knows what can appeal. “I am a momtrepreneur,” she says. “I feel like a bit of a maverick showing up at business events with my children in tow.” And although Tremain does the talking at business meetings, she believes children are as qualified as the experts in giving out literacy advice, tips and tricks.
    Tremain Media was created with the assistance of UVic’s Innovation and Development Corporation (IDC), a technology transfer service to introduce new products to the marketplace on behalf of faculty, staff, students and alumni. “Having such a business-oriented support team through IDC has been invaluable,” says Tremain. “IDC has provided a structure from which to grow. The services of a lawyer, bookkeeper and accountant, as well as the business support, have been quite important to the growth of Tremain Media.”
