UVic's Guide to Seniors Living Large

Making the most of your senior years—that’s the focus of the University of Victoria centre on aging’s 2006 community forum. The conference, entitled “Enhancing Capacity in Later Life”, takes place on Thursday, February 23 from 8:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. at UVic.

In the morning keynote speech, UVic’s nurse practitioner program coordinator Lynn Guengerich and nurse practitioner for the Fraser Health Authority Marie Weatherby will discuss the role of the nurse practitioner and the specific health needs of seniors. The afternoon plenary address, “Ever learning, ever growing: art experiences for the elderly,” is being presented by UVic education associate professor Robert Dalton.

As well as the plenary speeches, UVic experts and community professionals will present a total of six workshops. These include:

UVic gerontologist Dr. Elaine Gallagher and Victoria gerontologist Dr. Veronica Doyle will discuss the concept of supportive living, the newest developments at the Vancouver Island Health Authority in this type of housing, and the results of a one-year post-occupancy evaluation from a newer supportive living complex.

UVic psychology professor Dr. Michael Masson will talk about the relationship between conscious and unconscious influences of memory.

UVic social sciences associate professor Dr. Patrick McGowan’s workshop will focus on using self-management as a way for individuals with chronic health conditions to live full healthy lives.

As well, the conference features workshops on healthy eating for older adults, retirement planning, and consent and the law.

The forum takes place on Thursday, February 23, 2006 from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. in room C103 of the David Strong Building at UVic. Including lunch, the cost for seniors and students is $18.19, the fee for all others is $39.59 (prices include GST).
