Test Drive the All-New STV System
If you’re wondering if the proposed singe transferable vote system is for you, give it a test drive at an upcoming public forum at UVic. Speakers will explain the system, discuss its ramifications and then conduct a demonstration ‘election’ among the participants. Wendy Bergerud and Diana Byford, both members of the Citizens’ Assembly that chose the STV system, will explain how it would work. Environmental law students Jennie Milligan and Eli Walker will demonstrate the system by conducting a small ‘election,’ and UVic political scientist Dr. Reg Whitaker will review proportional representation patterns in other jurisdictions while the ‘ballots’ are counted. UVic political scientist Dr. Norman Ruff will be a commentator at the forum which will be moderated by Dr. Colin Bennett, chair of UVic’s political science department. The forum is sponsored by UVic, the Social Responsibility Council and the First Unitarian Church of Victoria.
