Risky Business Focus of Conference

Teenage parties are supposed to be fun but often they’re risky too with the presence and pressure of drugs, sex, drinking and driving and bullying. Youth will be invited to discuss how to have a good time without these risky behaviours at an upcoming Safest Party In Town (SPIT) conference. Sponsored by the Island Sexual Health Society in partnership with UVic’s centre for youth and society, the Victoria Youth Clinic and Project Respect, SPIT will attract 200 youth invited from 20 local high schools. Sessions offered by a variety of youth agencies in Victoria include “Dazed and Confused: The Truth about Alcohol and Drugs,” “Party Night or Party Nightmare,” and “When You Drink, You Don’t Think.” Katy Hutchinson will present her keynote address, “The Story of Bob,” at 9 a.m. It’s the moving account of how her husband was kicked to death when he went to investigate a rowdy house party.
