Computer Science workshop targets girls

Statistics show that less than one in five students studying computer science at university are female. The choices “away from science” are made in high school, so to help young women make more informed decisions, UVic’s office for women in computer science is holding a workshop on Saturday, May 8. All female students in Grades 6-12 are welcome. The free workshop offers interactive activities, tours and presentations by women from various areas of computer science. At the end of the day, a panel discussion will allow the young women to pose questions to professors, students, alumni and co-op staff. The office for women in science is a pilot project in UVic’s faculty of engineering to encourage more women to enter computer science. For more information or to register, contact Marilyn Burgess or Anissa St. Pierre at 721-8756, e-mail marilynb@uvic.ca or visit: wcs.csc.uvic.ca.
