BABY BORN TO UVIC COUPLE AWAITS HEART TRANSPLANT
A son born to a UVic couple
April 20 at Loma Linda Medical Centre in California is in infant
intensive care in urgent need of a heart transplant. David Eusebio,
the second son of Paulo Eusebio, a UVic MBA student, and his wife
Sonia, a UVic library employee, was born with hypoplastic left heart
syndrome (HLHS), a developmental defect of the left ventricle which
is fatal unless corrected. A second Vancouver Island family, Greg Fox
and Megan Sansbury of Port McNeill are also at Loma Linda awaiting a
donor heart for their infant daughter Lauren, who was born with
HLHS.
Both families urge British Columbians to consider registering with the B.C. Transplant Society (BCTS) Organ Donor Registry. To become an organ donor in B.C. a person must fill out an organ donor registration form, sign it, and return it to the BCTS. You must fill out a form even if you have an organ donor decal on your B.C. Care Card or driver's license. The forms are available at any London Drugs, Motor Vehicle Branch, ICBC Autoplan broker or claim centre, Van City Credit Union or through the BCTS. Donors must be 19 years of age or older to consent on their own. However, younger persons can be donors with the family's approval.
