El Niño devastates coral reefs

A team of marine scientists from the University of Victoria have returned from nearly a month of scuba diving on coral reefs in the middle of the equatorial Pacific Ocean where they discovered the reefs have been devastated by El Niño.

Gliders glimpse BC whales' secrets

The Ring

Majestic and mysterious, whales continue to fascinate researchers and nature lovers, but how whales live in the ocean’s depths is largely unknown. Now, the University of Victoria is on a mission to deepen our knowledge of rare and threatened baleen whales and help protect them from ship strikes. Over the next three weeks, a two-metre underwater ocean glider equipped with acoustic sensors, sonar and hydrophones will allow researchers to track whale movements by listening to and recording their sounds along the shelf break in Clayoquot Canyon.

Canada Prize for Nancy Turner

Ethnobotanist and ethnoecologist Nancy Turner is a long-time champion of Indigenous traditional knowledge and a world expert on traditional plant use. Her book, Ancient Pathways, Ancestral Knowledge: Ethnobotany and Ecological Wisdom of Indigenous Peoples of Northwestern North America, was announced the winner of the 2016 Canada Prize in the Social Sciences by The Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, on Monday, April 11th.

In a UVic-led study, the first data-driven estimate of the Earth's total supply of groundwater shows that less than six per cent of groundwater in the upper two kilometers of the Earth's landmass is renewable within a human lifetime.

Balloons for coastal mapping

The Ring

Heavy rain did not deter 25 undergraduate geography students from their hands-on learning course on beach dynamics and coastal erosion this February. Using new digital mapping technologies including terrestrial laser scanning (ground based LiDAR), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), kites and balloons, the students captured high-resolution imagery of Cadboro Beach.

Changing campus drinking

The Ring

A project dedicated to changing the culture of drinking and other substance use among post-secondary students received a funding investment of $400,000 from the province this Feb. Co-led by the University of Victoria’s Centre for Addictions Research (CARBC) and the Canadian Mental Health Association BC Division, Changing the Culture of Substance Use (CCSU) is a long-term project that’s helping 11 campuses across BC access evidence about alcohol and substance use, assess the cultures on their campuses, decide on—and test—ways to influence their campus cultures, develop tools, and share those tools and experiences with other campuses.

An app to help children with autism

The Ring

The newly released Let’s Face It 2.0, a scrapbook app developed by the University of Victoria’s Centre for Autism Research Technology Education (CARTE) and now available free on iTunes, is a powerful educational tool for learning faces and recognizing emotions of the important people in the lives of children on the autism spectrum. “It is a selfie culture and I hope our app will be adopted by anyone who finds it useful,” says CARTE director and UVic psychology professor Jim Tanaka. “Parents and educators can create their own storybook from people and objects in their children’s lives.”
