Like many outstanding students, the term "overachiever" is a good fit for graduating international Visual Arts major Guochen Wang. Born and raised in Taiyuan, a mid-sized city in China's central Shanxi province, Chen went to a local international high school before looking for overseas post-secondary options. And his reasons for choosing UVic may not be surprising.

BCom grad discovers new purpose

Tamika Rodney, BCom '18, was completing a hospitality management diploma at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology when a fateful need for caffeine and some eye-catching island photos conspired to redirect her toward UVic's Peter B. Gustavson School of Business, and a complete life change—though she didn't realize it at the time.

When Paige Quinn first moved to Vancouver Island to start her undergraduate degree, she intended on becoming an elementary school teacher. She had always loved working with children and grew up with a mother who taught grade one. But taking one of UVic's Exercise Science, Physical Health and Education classes hooked her on the program. She graduates this month.

Finding self, reclaiming space

Corrina Sparrow wanted more out of her post-secondary education experience. While she was excited for the learning, she yearned for something she believed post-secondary education could help her develop: a historic understanding and a stronger sense of Indigenous identity. She found what she was looking for largely through UVic's School of Social Work.

Indigenous law program launched

In an emotional ceremony on Sept. 25 to launch the world’s first Indigenous law program, Elders, national and provincial leaders, scholars and others from the UVic community gathered in First Peoples House to welcome the first cohort of 26 students who have come from across Canada to attend the program.

Campus cycling plan open house

The Ring

Following a year of consultation, the university’s inaugural Campus Cycling Plan is rolling to the finish line. Faculty, staff and students are invited to an open house in the University Centre lobby on Oct. 10 from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. to provide feedback before the plan is presented to the Campus Planning Committee and President for approval later this fall.

2018 UVic United Way campaign

On Sept. 28, the 2018 UVic United Way campaign officially kicked off at a special Vikes Nation event in the CARSA Performance Gym. Fans cheered on the Vikes while learning more about United Way.

Board of Governors update

The UVic Board of Governors is one of two primary governing bodies of the university. The board is responsible for the management, administration and control of the property, revenue and business affairs of the university. We welcome the newly appointed chair and vice-chair and newly elected student members to the 2018–2019 board.

Bike-assist powers student to Tesla co-op

The Ring

Engineering student Simon Park's Caboost invention—a trailer which converts any bicycle into an e-bike—helped him stand out to co-op recruiters at Tesla. Park is one of 44 UVic students who have secured co-ops with the energy and automobile technology company.

2018 Vanier scholars

Three UVic researchers have received 2018 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships—one of the federal government’s most prestigious scholarships for doctorial students and post-doctoral researchers. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of students’ extraordinary combination of academic excellence, research potential and leadership.

Trio elected to Royal Society of Canada

Three UVic faculty members have received the country’s highest academic honour, named 2018 fellows of the Royal Society of Canada: Benjamin Butterfield, Eike-Henner Kluge and Tim Stockwell.

Peru field school teaches ecology, economy and spirituality

The Ring

Walking along the foothills of the northern Peruvian Amazon, 14 UVic environmental studies students—along with instructors Ana Maria Peredo and Kate Turner and mentors Murdith McLean and Frederique Apffel-Marglin—embarked on a unique learning experience this spring that wove together ecology, economy and spirituality in an Indigenous setting.
