Horbachewski begins as new VP External

The University of Victoria is welcoming Chris Horbachewski as the new Vice-President External Relations. The appointment, effective Feb. 1, was approved by the Board of Governors on Oct. 28, 2019 following an international search.

Sustainability action plans show path forward

The Ring

The university’s Sustainability Action Plan guides efforts across campus to achieve greater sustainability in operations. The close-out report on the 2014-2019 plan, now available, shows that UVic has reduced operational greenhouse gas emissions 25 per cent below 2010 levels, while natural gas consumption intensity has decreased by 22 per cent. A new plan sets sustainability goals and actions until the end of 2021, when a broader Climate and Sustainability Action Plan is expected to be available.

New Vikes initiatives

UVic is unveiling several initiatives that build on the Vikes' rich athletic tradition and its ongoing and deep commitment to providing a supportive high-performance environment for student athletes. The changes and additions aim to affirm, educate and support a culture of excellence for UVic athletics and provide improved resources for students and coaches.

Investment policy addresses climate change

The Ring

The University of Victoria is proposing to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of its $225 million short-term investment fund, resulting in divestment from high-carbon emitting companies, and increased investment in renewable energy and other clean technologies.

When doctors see big data

The Ring

UVic health informatics graduate student Amr Farghali has developed a tool to help visualize vast amounts of patient data—improving the speed and accuracy of cancer diagnosis. “The human brain interprets visual images faster than text,” says Farghali, who works full-time as a senior pharmacist. Farghali decided to redirect his medical science career to where the need was greatest: providing cancer specialists with faster, more efficient screening methods.

Conservation field school in Tanzania

The Ring

Last August, as the sun set on the Serengeti National Park, 19 UVic geography students and their instructors arrived in Tanzania to begin a month-long field school on conservation management. Despite the hardships of water rationing and extreme heat, it was a trip of a lifetime for the students, who immersed themselves in the customs and culture of Tanzania while learning about local forest management and ecological conservation practices.

Times Higher Education subject rankings

Times Higher Education has released its 2020 world university rankings by subject for physical sciences and psychology, placing UVic programs in these areas among the Top 200 around the globe. These are in addition to previously announced Top-300 rankings for UVic in arts and humanities, computer science, and engineering and technology.

A librarian's truth-telling journey

UVic Librarian Pia Russell was inspired by the findings from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to accomplish a fourth university degree, graduating in one of the first cohorts in UVic’s new masters in public history program.

A rock-solid solution for CO2

The Ring

Scientists now know that for Earth to stay within the temperature increase limit set by the Paris Agreement, negative emission technologies, which remove and permanently sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, are essential. The Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions is bringing together an international team of experts to take on this challenge in a new four-year feasibility study.

Student team wins cybersecurity competition

A team of four UVic students came home champions from a national competition in October, for a software solution to help small businesses achieve cybersecurity. Six finalist teams were invited to present their solutions at the People in Cyber Conference in Toronto on Oct. 19. The UVic team, which won the $3,000 grand prize, impressed the judges with a package that included a working web application—not just a concept

Food production in time of climate crisis

An interdisciplinary team of UVic and international scholars is exploring how vulnerable communities can build local and regional governance of food systems in the context of climate crisis. They met recently on Vancouver Island for a workshop that launched the Four Stories About Food Sovereignty project.

When working with asylum seekers and refugees in Malaysia as part of an internship through the Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives, Claire Horwood saw first-hand how poor policies affected the lives of vulnerable people.

Following an international search, Chris Horbachewski has been appointed as Vice-President External Relations, effective Feb. 1, 2020. Horbachewski joins UVic from the University of Lethbridge, where he has served as the Vice-President, Advancement since 2005.

International dignitaries visit UVic

On Sept. 30, UVic hosted 51 dignitaries from 47 countries showcasing our world-leading research and to emphasize UVic’s focus on internationalization, clean energy and oceans. The university’s ongoing commitment to Indigenizing the academy was also highlighted.

A new exhibit at Legacy Downtown showcases high fashion designs by contemporary Gitxsan couturier Sug-ii-t Lukxs (Yolonda Skelton) and is curated by Carolyn Butler-Palmer, UVic’s Legacy Chair in Modern and Contemporary Arts of the Pacific Northwest.
