Four UVic Vanier scholars

The Ring

Four University of Victoria researchers are named Vanier Canada Graduate Scholars in an annual competition announced today by the Government of Canada. Vanier scholars, who receive $50,000 funding each year for three years, demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies. The scholarships are earmarked for social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health.

UVic adopting climate charter

The University of Victoria is among 15 Canadian universities signing a charter to address the global crisis of climate change. Under the Investing to Address Climate Change Charter, the universities pledge to follow responsible investment practices in ways to address this global challenge.

On World Oceans Day, two geography grad students prepare for an immersive two weeks of remote field work studying kelp forests on BC’s central coast. Adhering to strict COVID-19 protocols, Brian Timmer and Lianna Gendall will be self-isolating for 14 days before they embark on their MITACS internship with the Hakai Institute.

Cecilia Benoit, a scientist with the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (CISUR) and professor emerita with the Department of Sociology, has been awarded the 2020 Killam Prize in Social Sciences from the Canada Council for the Arts

3M National Student Fellows

Two of 10 of this year's prestigious 3M National Student Fellowships have been awarded to UVic students. Hanna Jacobsen (sociology and gender studies), and Madeleine Kenyon (philosophy) join eight others to become Canada’s 2020 3M fellowship recipients.

A race to make ventilators

UVic alumni are working around the clock to produce ventilators at Victoria-based StarFish Medical. The project is one of four that will collectively supply 30,000 ventilators to the Canadian market.

Trudeau scholar addresses gender violence

Can Indigenous diplomatic legal principles help lead communities away from gender violence? Jasmine Dionne, a UVic PhD student in political science, is working with the Cree and Metis community of Saka Wiyiniwak (Cree for “Boreal Forest Peoples”) in Northeastern Alberta to reimplement Indigenous legal principles, as part of a three-year scholarship, announced this month by the Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation. She is one of only 16 Canadian doctoral students receiving a $180,000 award.

A global impact ranking released today by Times Higher Education (THE) evaluating universities’ global contributions towards meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) puts UVic among the world’s top tier of leaders in climate action, and among the world’s top 100 institutions overall in contributing to a sustainable future for the planet. THE ranked UVic fourth among the world’s universities for climate action—meaning research and action taken to understand and respond to the global challenge of climate change.

This year’s President’s Extraordinary Service Awards honour a big picture thinker, a master collaborator, Giving Tuesday’s record-smashing team and sustainability-minded service workers.

UVic donates hand sanitizer

The Ring

UVic has delivered more than 200 litres of hand sanitizer—enough for about 65,000 single doses—for use by Island Health, whose front-line workers are in the thick of responding to the health crisis. UVic chemist David Leitch led the effort to plan and execute a manufacturing campaign consistent with stringent Health Canada standards, using supplies already on hand.
