2020 was like no other—and the UVic community kept doing what we do best. Here are just a few of the many stories that helped shape a year of news.

Liquor and lockdown

The Ring

British Columbians have been drinking more alcohol during the COVID-19 pandemic, with private liquor store sales accounting for most of the increase in consumption, especially during lockdown.

Surveying First Nations' economic development

The Ring

The BC First Nation Community Economic Development Survey, developed in part by UVic’s National Consortium for Indigenous Economic Development, has been recently released by the BC Ministry of Jobs, Economic Development and Competitiveness. The analysis reveals the interconnectedness of Indigenous economic, cultural and social values. Empowered by traditions, guided by laws and values, Nations are returning to well-being and economic diversity.

Strategies for economic growth in Greater Victoria

Many of the recommendations made by this week’s Rising Economy Taskforce report build directly on UVic's strengths. These include innovation, access to digital resources and technology, inclusion, and investing in the future workforce.

In Memoriam: Dr. Judith Anne Payne

Art exhibition interrupted by COVID-19

Quantum computing connects industry, academia
