Indigenous leader Ry Moran becomes Canada’s first-ever Associate University Librarian—Reconciliation at UVic Libraries. In this new role, Moran will be looking to partner with Indigenous communities and work to directly address the need to help preserve and sustain Indigenous knowledge, as well as introduce Indigenous approaches to knowledge into the daily work of the Libraries.

How COVID-19 student bursary helped

Close to 2,000 students received the COVID-19 Support Bursary between March and June, 2020. The university initially committed $200,000 to meet the immediate challenges students were facing as a result of the pandemic, from lost jobs, to technology issues, to urgent housing needs. Within weeks, hundreds of alumni, community members, staff and faculty contributed to the bursary to help the university meet the overwhelming demand for support.

Grad student research on kelp forests

On World Oceans Day, two geography grad students prepare for an immersive two weeks of remote field work studying kelp forests on BC’s central coast. Adhering to strict COVID-19 protocols, Brian Timmer and Lianna Gendall will be self-isolating for 14 days before they embark on their MITACS internship with the Hakai Institute.

New purchasing code of conduct

The university’s Purchasing Services department has developed a new Supplier Code of Conduct (SCoC). The code sets out ethical standards of conduct for UVic suppliers while supporting the university’s commitment to sustainability.
