Rowan Meredith misses the rain. The Slavic studies major, who graduates from UVic in November with the highest GPA in her faculty, has trudged the empty rail beds of former concentration camps in Central Europe and visited Russia in the throes of Olympic mania—but now she is in Los Angeles for graduate studies and “misses the rain desperately. It never ever rains here. Having grown up on BC’s west coast, it seems bizarre to me. I’m not dealing well without rain.”

Co-ops chart path to med school

From touring animal shelters in South Africa to analyzing cells from human blood or harvested mouse spleens in Vancouver, Stacey LeDoux’s UVic experiences have been a little different than most. LeDoux graduates this month from UVic, and as she waits to hear back about her med school applications, she’s reflecting on her time as an undergraduate. “UVic not only gave me the opportunity to travel, but to explore my interests, develop my skills, and apply my learning,” she says.

Co-ops confirm international student’s career choice in engineering When Anaïssia Franca transferred to UVic after the second year of her engineering science program in France, communicating was her biggest challenge. “I had a good understanding of English—but trying to contribute my ideas in group projects when you’re the only woman and there’s a language barrier? That was very hard,” she says.

Stó:lō Ethnohistory Field School

The only ethnohistory field school in Canada to offer a firsthand learning opportunity involving traditional knowledges of oral history and research of historical documents has been immersing graduate students every second spring since 1998 deep within the Stó:lō community in BC.

Update (Oct. 28, 2015): The first Kit for Cultural History was unveiled this month at Rutgers University in New Jersey. The kits will also be presented Nov. 20 at 12:30 p.m. in UVic's David Strong Building (room C116), with physical copies being sent to universities across North America.

Reviving spooky cultural artifacts

Just in time for Halloween, the Humanities Maker at UVic launched its first Kit for Cultural History, which reinvents a skull stick-pin from the 1860s. The kit is a tangible example of how the Maker Lab combines cultural research with digital fabrication and also of today's thriving maker movement which involves DIY approaches. Unveiled at Rutgers University in New Jersey, the kit features the cravat pin introduced by French engineer Gustave Trouv&e#180; at an 1867 exhibition in Paris and now housed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, UK.

Education grad Mike Irvine took academia beneath the waves for his scuba-diving master's defence When education grad student Mike Irvine first posed his master’s project research question to his advisor, the idea struck Jason Price as a humourous oxymoron. Irvine wanted to explore how technology could be used as a tool to reconnect kids to nature.

An international career path in law

Anna Beatch doesn’t like to plan too far ahead, and that feeds her thirst for adventure. She likes a challenge, which is why she chose UVic Law after receiving her undergrad commerce and business law degree from the University of Alberta. “I wanted to challenge myself and push my boundaries,” says Beatch. “I also chose UVic Law because of the co-op program.”

Entrepreneur award to David Foster

Most university lectures start with an illustrious speaker at a podium, poised to impart knowledge to students. That clich&e#180; was turned upside down by this year’s Gustavson School of Business Distinguished Entrepreneur of the Year, David Foster, when he recently spoke to Business and Fine Arts students: not only was this class far from a traditional lecture, but the students were engaged and energized right from the start. After the screening of a video about his career, Foster sat behind a keyboard (“I’ll play if you beg me … and even if you don’t.”) in a lecture theatre. “So. Business. Let’s talk. Questions?” It didn’t take long before a brisk, incisive, vibrant interchange got underway.

The BC government has announced $6 million in funding (provided through the BC Innovation Council) for students to receive job training in the technology sector.

Electrical engineering grad Sarah Allan explored her personal and professional interests at home and abroad while at UVic—thanks in large part to the co-op program. “Taking part in the co-op program allowed me to explore many of my personal interests,” she says. “It also allowed me to gain industry knowledge that wouldn’t have possible in a traditional degree program.”

For Emily Mailes of Melbourne, Australia, deciding what to study was a daunting process. “I was not one of those people who always knew what they wanted to do.” Six years post-high school and having relocated to Victoria, Emily decided to pick a path and move forward with her life. “UVic’s School of Health Information Sciences stood out,” she says. A relative is a grad who now has an interesting and lucrative career. The global opportunities across the tech sector held considerable appeal along with the school’s promise of guaranteed placement upon graduation.
