From Borneo textiles to the world’s largest button blanket, from a 15th-century alabaster religious carving to a 19th-century lady’s pocket revolver, from anarchist manifestos to a Jim Carrey movie, the objects studied by art historians continue to change with the times. Spreading a love of science

Microbiology co-op student Levana Mastrangelo is doing her part to make a difference in local Indigenous communities. She recently completed a co-operative education (co-op) work term with the Aboriginal STEM Outreach Program, where she became a liaison between UVic’s Science Venture and Indigenous youth on Vancouver Island.

The Phoenix at 50

For 50 years, the theatre department and Phoenix Theatre—its public performance wing—have helped shape the development of local and national theatre by producing celebrated alumni and innovative productions. Growing from a volunteer-built, 80-seat theatre into Canada’s leading comprehensive theatre program, the Phoenix is now one of the best educational theatre facilities in the country.

Forensic anthropology course conducts in-death investigations. All jokes about popular TV shows like Sherlock and CSI aside, real-world forensic anthropologists who assist in identifying and locating of missing persons share a desire for problem solving, critical thinking and a deep curiosity. Stephanie Calce’s forensic anthropology class exposes students to the huge field of forensic science through hands-on projects. Spoiler alert: the students live.

Indigenous Resurgence Coordinator

Chaw-win-is is the recently appointed Indigenous Resurgence Coordinator within the Faculty of Education. “This position and others initiatives like it across Canada,” says Chaw-win-is, “are a result of the on-going efforts of Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous allies all across Canada who have been generating awareness about colonization within the education system.”

A world-first discovery about Stone Age tools, vital hints for the future of coral reefs in warming oceans and a dwarf planet that transfixed media across our globe are just some of the many captivating UVic stories over the past 12 months.

New programmer at Legacy Art Galleries

At Legacy Art Galleries, Academic and Community Programmer Gillian Booth works on development and facilitation of programs related to gallery exhibitions and the UVic art collection and she also helps grow and enhance links with community. She's "always been a maker and a writer" — with an eye on art.

MAPs for Indigenous language learning

The Ring

Adult learners are a "missing generation" in Indigenous language revitalization. The majority of fluent speakers are 70 years of age or older and although young children in immersion are speaking their languages in increasing numbers, many Indigenous adults aged 18 to 60 do not. Onowa McIvor (Indigenous education) and Peter Jacobs (linguistics) just wrapped up the first study of the Mentor-Apprentice Program for Indigenous adult language learners in BC.

New life for McKinnon

Renovations in McKinnon are now almost complete and the building is now the teaching and research hub for the School of Exercise Science, Physical & Health Education.
