Students from the humanities, social sciences, fine arts and law—now back in Victoria after a transformative trip overseas and also in Winnipeg—came together for a powerful and challenging field school that brought them to historic sites in Europe and taught them valuable lessons about Canada.

Can brainwaves predict baseball performance?

Many consider baseball to be one of the most difficult skills in any sport. So, what makes a batter successful? Some think it requires that the athlete be in “the zone”—a mental state in which performance is optimal. But what is “the zone”? Can it be quantified? Olav Krigolson, UVic neuroscientist, paired up with Anthony Pluta, a pro-ball-player-turned-grad-student to find out.

A group of 17 UVic anthropology students went back to the Stone Age working with bone, shell, obsidian, stone and wood to make hand tools and spear-like weapons that are thrown with a spear thrower, known as the atlatl.

EU study tour

Nine students traveled to Europe this May on the annual EU Study Tour. Offered through UVic's European studies program, the tour includes visits to Brussels, Luxembourg, Strasbourg and Frankfurt. One student, Anna Dodd, describes how the experiences overseas are now influencing her future choices.

Visual arts professor swims into past, creates the future

Intermedia artist and UVic visual arts chair Paul Walde dove into the waters of Algonquin Park's Canoe Lake on July 8 and, after months of preparation, completed the first stage of The Tom Thomson Centennial Swim.

How do you really live a field school experience? According to 23 UVic anthropology students, you start by going off the beaten track for 30 days in Cuba, the biggest island in the Caribbean. Some of our students created media projects about their experiences.

Spring 2017 Convocation

It was the perfect hands-on research project for someone with small hands. Renée Adams' project required extensive preliminary research into archaic death rituals and Egyptian mummification practices, as well as meticulous attention to detail... and a lot of tiny tools.
