UVic launches Indigenous water stewardship project

A new project looking at the critical issue of BC’s water laws will have a vital impact on water stewardship in BC for decades to come. The project is the first to examine both Indigenous and colonial water stewardship, and will focus on three regions of the province where water use is at issue—the Similkameen Valley, the Cowichan Valley of eastern Vancouver Island, and the Nemiah Valley in the Chilcotin.

WITS gets top marks

The UVic-led victimization prevention program for children—Walk away, Ignore, Talk it out, Seek help (WITS)—received top marks earlier this month from Dalhousie University researchers, taking first place when compared to six other international bullying prevention programs. More than 600 schools across Canada have used the program.

Profound warming predicted with high cumulative emissions

If the Earth’s remaining untapped fossil-fuel resources are burned—the equivalent of five trillion tonnes of carbon emissions—the average global temperature is predicted to increase by between 6.4°C and 9.5°C, with Arctic temperatures warming between 14.7°C and 19.5°C, according to a paper published this week in Nature Climate Change. The strong warming increase is considerably larger than previously anticipated.
