Cancer Survivor Brings Groundbreaking Theatre to Victoria

Local volunteers are helping a three-time cancer survivor bring her groundbreaking live theatre performance to Victoria. Funds raised at the event will be donated to the BC Cancer Foundation.

Jonna Tamases, an actor who has been treated for Hodgkin's disease, large-cell lymphoma and breast cancer has turned her experience into a funny, uplifting performance that conveys a message of power and joy.

Jonna's Body, please hold shows one night only, Saturday March 24, at 7:30 p.m. at the First Metropolitan United Church, 932 Balmoral Road, Victoria. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the venue is wheelchair accessible. The University of Victoria Equity and Human Rights Office and the Department of Women's Studies are among the show’s sponsors.

Victoria resident and co-producer Marilyn Fuchs, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2005, saw Jonna's show in Seattle last July and came home inspired to share the experience with a local audience.

“It was sheer pleasure to be laughing together about the experience of having cancer. Too often only the medical aspects of cancer are emphasized and the human aspects are overlooked,” she says. “We want people touched by cancer, personally or in their circle of family, friends and colleagues, to come and have a good time.”

Net proceeds from the performance go to the BC Cancer Foundation, an independent charitable organization that raises funds to support cancer research and care in BC through the BC Cancer Agency. Tickets are $20, and are available at Munro's Books (1108 Government Street), the BC Cancer Foundation (3rd floor, BC Cancer Agency, 2410 Lee Avenue) and online at www.bccancerfoundation.com/jonnasbody .

Other sponsors are the Villa Marco Polo Inn, Shaw TV, Focus Magazine, Monday Magazine, Village 900 radio and the Camosun College School of Health and Human Services.
