UVIC Hosts Shanghai Journalists

Ghosts and goblins aren’t the only ones descending on Victoria today. Fifteen journalists and editors from the print media in Shanghai, China are in town to learn more about media and communications in Canada. The two-month custom executive program is the first of its kind to be offered by the faculty of business at the University of Victoria.  “Canada’s trading relationship with China is developing rapidly,” says Dr. Saul Klein, Lansdowne professor and director of the faculty’s executive programs. “Introducing journalists to the way we do business in Canada, particularly explaining the way our media work, will build relationships and improve cultural ties.” Representatives from Xin-Min Evening News (circulation about 1,000,000), Wenhui Daily (circulation 350,000), Xinmin Weekly (similar to Time Magazine with circulation over 200,000) and Shanghai Daily (English language, circulation 50,000) are among the group who will participate in a series of lectures and hands-on learning opportunities. Topics include a mix of theory and practice such as the difference between opinion and point of view, to running a city desk to the use of the Internet as a journalist’s essential research tool.
