Backgrounder: Where the Learning Never Stops

Continuing studies has been central to UVic since the university was established in 1963. During the 2002-03 school year, 16,665 credit and non-credit students took part in continuing studies programs at UVic and it’s estimated that they contributed $27.9 million to the Capital Regional District through discretional spending and operations.

Construction of UVic’s new continuing studies building began January 1, 2003 and was completed, on target, November 7, 2003. The division of continuing studies invested $9.6 million in the project.

The 3,934 square metres of space is spread over three stories and includes 16 classrooms, two state of the art language labs, instructor resource rooms, seminar, meeting, and interview rooms.

In addition to administration, the office of the dean, promotions and publications, the new building houses the following program units:

• arts and science, women’s and seniors’ programs
• cultural management programs
• English language centre
• health sciences programs
• technology, engineering and computing (TEC) programs
• online and distance education

Several units will remain with the associated faculty, including continuing studies in education in the MacLaurin building, business and management programs in the business and economics building, and TEC and business and management programs in the Ian Stewart Complex.
