Hul'q'umi'num Storied Place Names Project

Joey Caro and Florence James wanted to have a web map with Hul’q’umi’num’ place names from the HTG Treaty Game which could be easily heard. The first iteration of this project was put together by McGill Anthropology undergraduate honors student, Mélanie Witts co-supervised by Brian Thom and Colin Scott. Over the course of an afternoon, audio recordings were shared by Joey and Florence about each of these places. The first webmap was put together by Mélanie Witts as part of her honours thesis project.

As part of the Commemorating Ye’yumnuts project, it was clear that K-12 students would benefit from an easily accessible webmap with Hul’q’umi’num’ place names audio.  Adding new audio recordings from Cowichan Tribes Education Department Chuck Seymour, we have created a new map of the HTG Treaty Game place names using Google Earth Web .

Our work with Hul’q’umi’num’ place names is ongoing, and only includes a small selection of the over 700+ place names recorded in the Hul'qumi'num’  language. As part of the work supporting the Cowichan Dictionary project, HTG has published a more comprehensive map of Hul’q’umi’num’ Snuhuwmuhw.
